Students must meet the criteria to take the course
Qualifications:
- Be a legal resident of or otherwise eligible for employment in the United States; and
- Be able to receive and transmit spoken messages in English; and
- Pass a written 24 question examination as described below. To pass, you must correctly answer at least 18 out of 24 questions.
- Obtain an FCC FRN prior to the start of the class (Sea School will assist you with this).
Who Needs An FCC Marine Radio Operator Permit?
The FCC requires a Marine Radio Operator Permit to operate radiotelephone stations aboard certain vessels that operator on open waters, tidewaters, and the Great Lakes of the United States. The Marine Radio Operator Permit is required to operate a radiotelephone station on vessels that carry more than six passengers for hire, or aboard vessels of more than 300 gross tons. The license is issued for a lifetime period (no renewal required).
If you answer “yes” to any of the questions below, then you are required to have an FCC Marine Radio Operator Permit.
- Is your vessel approved to carry more than six passengers for hire in the open sea or any tidewater area of the United States?
- Does your vessel operate radios on medium frequencies or high frequencies – a single sideband radio?
- Is your vessel greater than twenty meters (65.6’) in length and sailing on the Great Lakes?
- Is your vessel greater than eight meters (26’) in length and engaged in towing on the Great Lakes?
- Is your vessel three hundred gross tons or more and required by law to hold a radio station license?
