All the answers you’ll need before enrolling in the License Renewal course
A USCG License Renewal course is typically a one-day or two-day course. At Sea School, we offer an online one-day license renewal course.
If you are a mariner whose license is going to expire soon, you have three options to renew your license:
- Show 360 days of sea service in the past five years
- Take a USCG Exam
- Attend a one-day Renewal Course that meets USCG requirements
After your license expires, you have a one year grace period during which you can renew your license. However, during this time the license may not be used.
This course covers renewals for the following licenses:
- OUPV/6-Pack
- Mate 25/50/100/200 GRT
- Master 25/50/100/200 GRT
No. Taking the course and passing the quiz fulfil the training and testing requirement. Upon completion, you will be given a course completion certificate which you must submit to the Coast Guard for final approval. The USCG maks the final decision based on your complete application.
The USCG has specific criteria for sea service. Generally, sea service from recreational boating does not qualify for license renewal, but it is important to check first with the USCG.
- 360 days of service during the past 5 years from date stamped on application, OR
- Pass a comprehensive, open-book exercise, OR
- Complete an approved refresher training course
You will need the following to renew your license with the USCG:
- Sea Service Documents (CG-719S, Sea Service Letter, etc.)
- Course Completion Certificate (if choosing to take a renewal course)
- USCG Medical Certificate/Physical
- Drug Testing Documentation
- Old MMC
- TWIC or Exemption
- USCG Fees
- Completed CG-719B
