Yes, depending on the specific duties and the type of dangerous liquids handled, there can be different endorsements or levels of training, such as Person-in-Charge (PIC) endorsements for specific cargo types or more advanced courses covering complex transfer operations and emergency procedures.
The Tank Barge Person In Charge (PIC) is responsible for the safe and compliant transfer of liquid cargo. Their duties include pre-transfer planning, overseeing cargo transfer operations, emergency response, and regulatory compliance.
Training will typically cover the following topics:
- Liquid cargo handling
- Safety procedures
- Regulatory compliance (46 CFR)
- Emergency response
The primary focus is to provide mariners with the specialized knowledge and skills required for the safe and environmentally responsible transportation of dangerous liquid cargoes on tank barges, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and best practices.
You can also find a list of approved courses on the NMC website under the “Approved Courses” tab. Upon completion of the course, mariners receive a Course Completion Certificate that they must submit alongside a USCG application for official certification. It is important to note that a Course Completion Certification is NOT a substitute for the official USCG credential.
