FAQs about Z-Drive Training
Introduction to Z-Drive is designed for mariners new to Z-drive vessels, experienced conventional-vessel operators looking to add azimuth handling to their skill set, and recreational boaters seeking advanced simulator-based training. Prior experience operating a conventionally controlled vessel (recreational or commercial) is required, and students must be at least 18.
No. Introduction to Z-Drive is an introductory boat-handling course focused on basic Z-drive maneuvering — not ship-assist or escort work — and does not by itself satisfy any USCG licensing or TOAR requirement. Think of it as foundational stick-time before pursuing a TOAR, ASD endorsement, or commercial Z-drive role.
