Why is RADAR School Important
RADAR School is not just another training course; it's a fundamental component of maritime safety and professionalism. It provides mariners with the essential knowledge and skills to operate radar effectively, make informed decisions, avoid collisions, navigate safely in all conditions, and comply with national and international regulations, ultimately protecting lives, property, and the environment.

It’s important to understand what the course involves, what’s required, and what you can expect after completion. From age and sea time requirements to testing options, paperwork, and career paths - this section covers everything you need to know to feel confident about enrolling.
The RADAR Observer Unlimited Endorsement certifies that a mariner possesses the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively utilize RADAR equipment for navigation and collision avoidance in all waters.
The Sea School offers RADAR Observer Unlimited courses at our Bayou La Batre, AL location. You can also find a list of approved courses on the NMC website under the “Approved Courses” tab.
As of July 22, 2019, mariners are able to renew their RADAR Observer (Unlimited) in three different ways:
- Documenting 360 days of sea service on a RADAR equipped vessel within the last five years.
- Meeting the requirements in 46 CFR 10.227(e)(1)(v) of having instructed a Coast Guard approved or accepted RADAR course at least twice within the past five years.
- Completing an approved or accepted original, refresher, or recertification course (46 CFR 11.480(d)) in the past five years

Typically, a RADAR Observer (Unlimited) Course covers:
- RADAR equipment & operation
- RADAR plotting and interpretation
- Collision avoidance
- Navigation
- Rules of the road related to RADAR use
RADAR Observer (Unlimited) qualifies you to operate RADAR systems in ALL waters. An Unlimited Endorsement typically comes with additional days of classroom learning and practical training. A RADAR Observer (Limited) qualifies you to operate on a more limited selection of waters or vessels.
