USCG Physicals with Sea School - FAQs
Mariners need one to get an original Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), to raise their grade, or to renew their medical certificate. Your provider records the exam on Form CG-719K, which you then submit to the National Maritime Center through the Navita portal.
No, it's separate. Most MMC applications require a drug test taken within the past 185 days, but a drug test isn't required when you're applying for a medical certificate only. Sea School's sister business, APCA, offers both one-time drug tests for mariners and random drug testing consortium management for companies and owner/operators.
No. By booking your physical online with Sea School you are reserving your spot a specific day and location. Once you show up to the Sea School location you are reserved for, the doctor or practitioner will see you and other mariners on a first-come, first-serve basis.
For deck officers, vision must be correctable to at least 20/40 in one eye, with uncorrected vision of at least 20/200 in that same eye, and color vision must be satisfactory. For engineers, the corrected vision standard is 20/50. For hearing, you need an unaided threshold of 30 decibels or less in at least one ear on an audiometer test. If you don't pass the audiometer test, a speech discrimination test can still qualify you. If you need glasses or hearing aids to meet the standards, your credential will carry a limitation requiring you to wear them while working.
